Derzeit ist Wintersport angesagt, doch die Läufer und Biker stehen bereits in den Startlöchern. Auf der Ispo – der weltgrößten Sportmesse, die vergangene Woche in München stattfand – konnten Bewegungshungrige sich über Trends bei der Ausrüstung informieren, technische Gadgets inklusive.

Diese spielen nicht nur als Wegweiser und virtuelle Coaches eine immer größere Rolle, sie können sogar Leben retten. Lawinen-Verschütteten-Suchgeräte (LVS) sollten bei Touren abseits der präparierten Pisten selbstverständlich sein. Diese „Lawinenpiepserln“ ermöglichen den nicht verschütteten Gruppenmitgliedern das rasche Aufspüren von Lawinenopfern. Das rund 300 Euro teure Orthovox 3+ etwa wählt mittels Lagesensor jene der drei integrierten Antennen aus, die für die Ortung am günstigsten ausgerichtet ist. Geräte wie das Pieps Vector (500 Euro) verfügen zusätzlich über GPS-Modul. Damit kann nicht nur der Standort an weitere Helfer weitergegeben werden, sie zeichnen auch auf, welche Gebiete bereits abgesucht und wo eventuell Verschüttete gefunden wurden. Sozusagen als „ziviler“ Nebennutzen können die Touren aufgezeichnet und daheim auf dem PC nachvollzogen werden. Aktuelle Geräte bieten die Möglichkeit, nach mehreren Verschütteten zu suchen, indem sie Signale von bereits Georteten auf Wunsch ignorieren.

Wie ein aktueller Test des Schweizer Fernsehens zeigt, gibt es hier große Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Modellen (www.videoportal.sf.tv). LVS sind nur im Set mit Schaufel und Lawinensonde sinnvoll – und nur dann, wenn der Nutzer auch damit umgehen kann. Zudem kann das beste LVS Besonnenheit sowie Sachverstand bei Tourenplanung und Beurteilung von Hängen nicht ersetzen.

Nicht ganz so dramatischen Zwecken dienen GPS-Geräte, die Outdoor-Vertreter dieser Gattung sind aber (nicht nur) am Berg ebenfalls hilfreich. So speichert das knapp hundert Euro teure Brunton Get-Back GPS bis zu drei Wegpunkte und lotst bei Bedarf dorthin zurück. Wobei – besonders im alpinen Bereich – gilt, dass man sich nicht allein auf technische Wegweiser verlassen sollte.

Magellan präsentierte auf der Ispo mit dem 150 Gramm leichten Explorist110 ein Einsteigergerät für 130 Euro, das Outdoor-Navigation inklusive Geocaching beherrscht. Die Explorist-Modelle 510, 610 und 710 können zudem mit Seekarten von Navionics gefüttert werden. Mio zeigt mit Cyclo 300/305 wetterfeste Navis für Radfahrer, die neben Turn-by-turn-Navigation auch fahrradspezifische „Points of interest“ sowie Kalorienzähler etc. bieten. Eine Surprise-Funktion schlägt anhand vorgegebener Fahrzeit und Streckenlänge Ausflugsrouten vor.

Ein Multitalent ist das mit dem Ispo-Brandnew-Award ausgezeichnete Outdoor-Smartphone Takwak tw700. Das wasserdichte und stoßfeste Android-Handy verfügt nicht nur über integrierte Navigation, es kann – etwa in Gebieten ohne Mobilfunkempfang – auch als Walkie-Talkie nach PMR-446-Standard dienen.

Der Touchscreen ist resistiv, reagiert also nur auf stärkeren Druck, statt auf leichte Berührung der Fingerkuppen. Nicht ganz so bequem, dafür ist er mit Handschuhen oder im Regen zu bedienen. Das Takwak-Handy soll im Frühjahr um 550 Euro auf den Markt kommen.

Ebenfalls eine Vielzahl an Funktionen hat der Sportinstrumentespezialist Suunto in eine elegante Uhr gepackt. Die wasserdichte Suunto Ambit vereint am Handgelenk GPS-Outdoor-Navi, 3-D-Kompass, Höhenmesser sowie Barometer und Thermometer und ist in Verbindung mit dem optionalen Brustgurt auch eine Pulsuhr. Damit unterstützt sie Bergathlethen während und nach der Tour mit Informationen zu Route, Wetterentwicklung und Trainingsleistung. Der integrierte Akku soll im GPS-Modus 50 Stunden halten. Die Ambit soll ab März erhältlich sein. Ohne GPS, aber mit erweiterten Schwimmfunktionen besonders für Triathleten geeignet ist die rund 400 Euro teure Pulsuhr Garmin Forerunner 910XT.

Neben der Hardware spielen auch Apps eine immer größere Rolle. Smartphones mit GPS werden zu virtuellen Trainern, zeichnen die zurückgelegten Strecken auf und teilen die Leistungen auf Wunsch sofort über soziale Netzwerke. Mit der Runtastic-App sind hier auch Österreicher ganz vorne dabei. Das in Linz ansässige Unternehmen hat Ende des Vorjahres Runtastic-Apps für Rennrad und Mountainbike veröffentlicht, Anfang Jänner folgte eine überarbeitete Version der Android-App.

Wer seine Outdoor-Abenteuer in Bild und Ton verewigen will, braucht bald keine eigene Kamera mehr. Die Skibrille iON von Zeal Optics schießt 170-Grad-Weitwinkelfotos mit acht Megapixeln oder dreht Videos in 1080p. Das 400 Euro teure Gadget wird aber erst nächsten Winter verfügbar sein.

Garmin PNDs in Australia and new Zealand released from next month will join the majority of Garmin’s global PND range that already trust NAVTEQ as a map provider.

When it comes to most new tech products it seems bigger is better and GPS units are clearly no exception. the Garmin nuvi 50 is a navigation unit that has a large 5in screen and it also boasts now-standard features like lane guidance and junction view. the nuvi 50 is also easy to use thanks to Garmin’s well known interface.

With the exception of the stylish nuvi 3790T (the thinnest portable GPS in the world), most of Garmin’s GPS units look similar both in hardware design and software interface. Garmin is clearly living by the philosophy “if it’s not broken don’t fix it” and we tend to agree with them.

The nuvi 50 is no exception. its straightforward and bland, black design won’t win any design awards. the plastic build feels well constructed though and the 5in screen performs well in direct sunlight and is easy to read. It’s also responsive to touch when entering destinations, but text does appear a little jagged if you look closely. this isn’t a huge issue as your eyes should be on the road most of the time.

The Garmin nuvi 50’s user interface is simple and very effective; menu items are accompanied by either large boxes with text or clearly labelled icons, and the map screen is clear and uncluttered. you can now swipe on menu screens to see more icons (instead of having to touch an arrow button), which is a new software feature. Oddly, you need to delve into the main menu to adjust the volume: we would have appreciated a way to do this without having to leave the map screen.

The key navigation features of the nuvi 50 are all excellent — street names at the top of the map are clear, safety alerts include an audible alert and voice warning, and voice guidance is loud. the Garmin nuvi 50 includes an Australian text-to-speech voice that pronounces most street names accurately, while the unit is quick to find a GPS signal, and reroutes swiftly when you take a wrong turn.

Garmin uses WhereIs maps for its nuvi units, and although the nuvi 50 missed a few ‘no right turns’ during some our test routes, the maps warned of all the known red light cameras we passed during testing. like most GPS units the nuvi 50 prefers to use main roads rather than faster back streets. It has maps of both Australia and new Zealand preloaded.

Garmin’s lane assist and junction view features remain the best we’ve seen on any GPS unit. the nuvi 50 displays an image of the road and its surroundings, along with road signs identical to those used in the real world. the static image appears on the screen in the lead up to turn offs and is especially useful on busy freeway and motorway junctions, particularly on long trips.

The Garmin nuvi 50 is a basic unit so it lacks Bluetooth for hands-free calling and live traffic updates. Given its low price tag and the fact that these two features aren’t huge deal breakers when it comes to GPS features, they aren’t really missed. the nuvi 50 also lacks Garmin’s “ecoRoute” feature, a function can display a fuel report and choose an economical route. We suspect most users won’t miss this feature, but it’s ability to keep driving logs may make business users opt for a more expensive model.

Nike FuelBandAre you a fitness-crazy gym rat obsessed with feeling the burn? Or perhaps a Krispy Kreme-loving sloth perennially parked on the sofa? Either person may benefit from the new Nike+ FuelBand, a $149 wristband that diligently tracks your body’s activity, including running, dancing, skating, spelunking, and so on.

The Nike + FuelBand has a three-axis accelerometer that measures your movements and displays four metrics: calories, steps, time, and “NikeFuel,” a composite measure of your physical activity based on oxygen kinetics, the company says.

Here’s how FuelBand works:

The Nike + FuelBand syncs with the Nike+ website via a built-in USB connector, or wirelessly through Bluetooth. Apple iPhone users can download a free Nike app that tracks their daily athletic activity.

Nike’s new wristband isn’t the first athlete-monitoring gadget on the market. the company’s own Nike+ iPod, a $19 training sensor that works with an iPod nano, measures time, distance, pace, and calories.

Adidas’ miCoach training devices also track movement and cardio data, as does Garmin’s $200 Forerunner 305.

The water-resistant Nike+ FuelBand has a battery life of approximately four days, the company says. It’s now available for preorder.
