UPDATE: September 4, 2008 – Still very impressed with the 76CSx unit. it has come in real handy recently shopping for a house. all my opinions stated previously are still current. One very handy feature the unit doesn't have that I wish it did was the ability to choose an alternate route while your are traveling. This can come in handy in the event there is a detour or you want to calculate a route around a traffic jam. This would create a by-pass route on-the-fly. many street specific GPS units can do this. although, this unit can re-route if you go off course which is something different.
The '2008 City Navigator Map Update' is not much to be desired. I have not noticed any significant improvement in calculated routes or updated points of interest (POI) data over the 2007 maps release. The same errors that I have encounter initially are still there in the 2008 release(PA, NJ, NY areas). I am hesitant to purchase the 2009 update. I will probably wait until the 2010 Update.
The Foarm(R) case is the best protection out there still.
I am completely satisfied with this unit I have purchased & recommended other similar units by Garmin. Overall, the 76CSx is still a great unit.
UPDATE: August 23, 2007 – after reading reviews about the 2008 release of the Maps I decided to get. One special note: if you buy the update DVD make sure you get the correct release. for instance, if you have previously installed City Navigator North America v8 you need City Navigator North America 2008 UPDATE. if you own City Navigator North America v8 NT you need City Navigator North America 2008 NT. Get it? I found out the hard way but Garmin came through!
UPDATE: August 21, 2007 – a year has gone by and I still very much like my GPSmap 76CSx. Top notch!!! Garmin support has been great too. It's been great on on the road, on the trails and even on a plane! whether I am walking, driving or riding my bike. Actually, there isn't much I would change on this GPS unit. The button placement you get accustomed to very quickly and the menu-page layout is genius. It's been so easy to use this GPS. once you read what each feature does the book really isn't required anymore. Using the menus to get around to all the features and functions is easy and self-explanatory. since my initial purchase, I have upgraded the expandable memory to 2GB (SanDisk microSD $22 on Amazon) and managed to fit the 48-states and some parts of Canada.
I see that there is a 2008 version of the North American maps replacing version 8. I am reluctant to purchasing this newer version since I have found quite a few out of date points-of-interests in the v8 maps. On a positive note, using the maps I have had many successful finds.
Battery life using Duracell alkaline batteries while the GPS is set to "Alkaline" will last about 12 hours. I have tried 2500mAh Energizer rechargable batteries with the GPS unit set to "NiMH" but I only seem to get about 3 hours of use out of them.
Recently, I have purchased a Garmin Nuvi 350 for my father from Amazon (price was great) and he really likes it but that unit is primarily for the road. Just what he wanted. The GPSmap 76CSx is loaded with so much more for so many other uses.

Having the Foarm rubber protective case has kept the GPS looking and functioning as new. It's dropped a few times.
I highly recommend Garmin GPSmap76CSx unit to anyone looking for a GPS unit for the road, hiking and/or boating. The numerous menus and features are very intuitive and easy to use. The hi-res color screen may be small compared to in-car GPSs but is very clear. The time for the satellite lock is relatively quick. Even while indoors, I can get a lock on at least 3 or 4 satellites. Buildings with metal roofs or concrete floors above may not get any reception. This is expected of any unit.

I agree with others that mp3, Bluetooth, fm, announcing street “names,” etc., is overboard and is NOT what makes a good GPS. certainly Garmin has to make those for persons who want them; but for really just GOOD AND FAST navigation, the new series (205W etc) is all that’s necessary and is awesome at that. What is a good GPS … the Garmin handheld 60CSx … which I have! So I compared the two which isn’t really realistic since they both have different purposes, but both do navigation extremely well. Only the 60CSx will maintain its connection in extremely difficult areas (sky scraper buildings, overpasses, canyons, forest canopy, etc); but the 205W is not a slouch here either.
Satelite information … Speed: the 205W is every bit as fast as the 60CSx, if not just a tad faster, and that, in itself is amazing. it gathers satellites easily and once obtained, reconnects almost instantaneously after being turned back on. Get off Interstate 35E in Dallas and try to get back on … it’s a nightmare. But for the Nuvie 205W it was easy and very clearly described and stated … a great GPS.
I was sceptical at first about the new series until I read what Garmin accomplished here and other comments from reviewers: fast chip, storage for 1000 favourites, trip minder, clear directions and markings with distances given, road mph and your current mph (on screen) and time arrival at the objective (waypoint to go to), beautiful wide screen, easy mount dismount, etc. I could go on and on but … if it is toys you want (mp3, Bluetooth telephone, fm, etc.), don’t buy this one. BUT if you want the absolute BEST for the BUCK navigation … this series has it. the reaction speed of the unit is really impressive.
My wife loves this unit and how easy it is to do what she wants (that, my friend, is a good sales talk …).
Garmin’s back to great navigation is … great and at a great price. Your friends will be impressed.
Only complaint … no online operators manual … yet? But since I already had the 60CSx, it was easy to figure out and Garmin menus are easy and direct you to what you need to know. I have owned and used the 205W Nuvi since July 14, 2008. very satisfied!
I bought a Garmin nuvi 275t GPS which includes maps of USA and Europe. I'm looking at the Garmin site and wondering what the difference is between the Navigator maps (e.g. North America…) and the city maps (e.g. CityXplorer, Bay Area) and the water maps and the topo maps.
Does anyone know what the overlap, if any, is? or a web page / site that explains it?
It appears that I have the road maps for those two areas, the equivalent of the City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe. Would I then have to buy the CityXplorer London if I'm going to London and want additional POI, transit maps, etc. or am I covered with City Navigator Europe?
While I'm on a roll – do the topo and street maps interact nicely with each other? or do I have to switch between the street maps and the topo maps depending on what I'm doing?

What's the difference between different Garmin map types?
I know, subjective…was looking at the nüMaps Onetime™ City Navigator® North America NT 2010 update and Garmin's looking at 70 BUCKS for the update!!!! I find that knnda steep. Now, I have the 2008 maps still loaded, works for me, yeah, naturally there are some discrepancies (esp w/ POI (points of interest) and the like, any major highway changes aren'r reeflected, but thats minimal). Guess I'd like to updateb the maps, but looking for feedback from those that have purchased . Worth it? (I believe garmin also offers a "lifetime" update offer for 'bout 125 or so)
Anyway, nuff said, just looking for folks w/ experience. well spent upgrade $$ or stick pat and keep the 70 in my pockeT?

I am planning to buy a Garmin GPS navigator, but it's the first time I'm buying something like this. I would really appreciate any advice, like how much to spend, which features to look for etc. I basically need a decent system that is easy to use and isn't too expensive ($100 – $200).
I would recommend Garmin nuvi 255W, Garmin nuvi 265WT.

no one can tell you which kind of gps you need. this is ultimately up to you. you have to sit down and decide which features and such you will like to use. your own opinion will quickly define which type of gps you should search for. starting out with a price range is a good idea. now just figure out what features you need. when i was looking for my newelectronx gps, it took me awhile to. so take your time and purchase the right gps for you.
Look up the device that anyone recommends before you buy it. some GPS devices are known for common defects. Take for instance Garmin. Garmin is actually known for defective batteries and some other small issues. you can look up all this information here in yahoo answers. for instance a small search like mine turned up these results. Don't be alarmed about what you see or read. it is common. I did the same thing when I was buying my newelectronx primo gps. I read many reviews before I felt comfortable with buying from newelectronx. So, just take your time and read through the links provided below:

Which garmin gps navigator would you recommend to a first buyer?
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast/geocacher and you’re looking for just the right map set for your Garmin GPS, I have a great suggestion for you.
I’ve been looking for the right balance between accurate street-level information and accurate TOPO data for my GPS, and I’ve found a way to get both. GPSFileDepot has free, user-contributed map sets available for download. Since I live in Illinois, I’ve provided the following information and links for Illinois map sets, but if you don’t live in Illinois, you can likely still find the maps that you’re looking for on the main GPSFileDepot page.
If you have a map set which includes street-level maps on your device (such as a vehicle device with City Navigator NT), simply install a transparent topo map, such as the Illinois Transparent 24k Topo map, alongside City Navigator NT. this map features topo contour lines with the remainder of the map being transparent so you can have both this map and City Navigator NT enabled at the same time. Topo lines will appear along with the street maps, and turn-by-turn navigation will work as well. Topo lines only appear at a certain zoom level, so you won’t have the clutter of topo lines when you’re driving on the highway. (See important note below)
If you have a hand-held device and you’re looking to get both street-level and topo contour lines in a single map set, I have to recommend the Northeast Topo United States maps. this particular mapset covers Illinois in two sections [one, two] (There is a third segment but it does not contain Illinois maps). these feature accurate topo data along with fairly recent street-level data, giving you the best of both. Unfortunately, these map sets don’t include auto-routing (turn-by-turn) navigation, but if you’re on a trail, it’s not a feature you’re going to need or miss.
Important note(s) about installing map sets: Installing maps to your device requires you to have MapSource installed on your computer. if you have one map set (such as City Navigator NT ) on your device, and you plan on installing another map set along side it, make sure you have all of the products installed on your computer and map segments selected in MapSource before transferring to your device. Transferring one map set to your device via MapSource will overwrite any map sets already on your device. if you need assistance getting a product (such as City Navigator NT) installed in MapSource, please contact Garmin for assistance.
