 Garmin nuvi 50 GPS unit

When it comes to most new tech products it seems bigger is better and GPS units are clearly no exception. the Garmin nuvi 50 is a navigation unit that has a large 5in screen and it also boasts now-standard features like lane guidance and junction view. the nuvi 50 is also easy to use thanks to Garmin’s well known interface.

Garmin nuvi 2360LT review Garmin nuvi 3790T review

With the exception of the stylish nuvi 3790T (the thinnest portable GPS in the world), most of Garmin’s GPS units look similar both in hardware design and software interface. Garmin is clearly living by the philosophy “if it’s not broken don’t fix it” and we tend to agree with them.

The nuvi 50 is no exception. its straightforward and bland, black design won’t win any design awards. the plastic build feels well constructed though and the 5in screen performs well in direct sunlight and is easy to read. It’s also responsive to touch when entering destinations, but text does appear a little jagged if you look closely. this isn’t a huge issue as your eyes should be on the road most of the time.

The Garmin nuvi 50’s user interface is simple and very effective; menu items are accompanied by either large boxes with text or clearly labelled icons, and the map screen is clear and uncluttered. you can now swipe on menu screens to see more icons (instead of having to touch an arrow button), which is a new software feature. Oddly, you need to delve into the main menu to adjust the volume: we would have appreciated a way to do this without having to leave the map screen.

The key navigation features of the nuvi 50 are all excellent — street names at the top of the map are clear, safety alerts include an audible alert and voice warning, and voice guidance is loud. the Garmin nuvi 50 includes an Australian text-to-speech voice that pronounces most street names accurately, while the unit is quick to find a GPS signal, and reroutes swiftly when you take a wrong turn.

Garmin uses WhereIs maps for its nuvi units, and although the nuvi 50 missed a few ‘no right turns’ during some our test routes, the maps warned of all the known red light cameras we passed during testing. like most GPS units the nuvi 50 prefers to use main roads rather than faster back streets. It has maps of both Australia and new Zealand preloaded.

Garmin’s lane assist and junction view features remain the best we’ve seen on any GPS unit. the nuvi 50 displays an image of the road and its surroundings, along with road signs identical to those used in the real world. the static image appears on the screen in the lead up to turn offs and is especially useful on busy freeway and motorway junctions, particularly on long trips.

The Garmin nuvi 50 is a basic unit so it lacks Bluetooth for hands-free calling and live traffic updates. Given its low price tag and the fact that these two features aren’t huge deal breakers when it comes to GPS features, they aren’t really missed. the nuvi 50 also lacks Garmin’s “ecoRoute” feature, a function can display a fuel report and choose an economical route. We suspect most users won’t miss this feature, but it’s ability to keep driving logs may make business users opt for a more expensive model.

Would you buy a refurbished GPS? I'm thinking of buying the garmin nuvi 255w but i dont know...?

Should i buy it refurbished? I can save about fifty bucks by getting it refurb'd.

I think i once heard that buying a refurbushed GPS is really bad because the maps are not updated, and its not worth it

      What say you?

well, it's no different than the new ones.

I'm pretty sure it's got some kind of memory for the maps if it's not just all live feed, in which case it would be sent direct from their satellites and databases and what have you… if updated maps are a feature of the unit, then they'll still update

Refurbishment just means that they got it back, reinspected it, fixed anything that wasn't good enough quality for them (Most of the time probably just replacing the shell and/or screen and making sure all the components work right), then they sell it back more new than used.

UK Satnav questions (Garmin and TomTom)?

My TomTom 520 died about a year after I got it and I had numerous problems with it throughout that year, particularly if I downloaded software updates. TomTom's support was appallingly bad.

So now I find myself looking for a new sat nav. Should I avoid TomTom? the review sites give their products good ratings but actual user reviews frequently complain about faulty products and poor support.

One of the alternatives I'm looking at is the Garmin Nuvi 1310. it looks good but does it have all the features provided by TomTom's? In particular, can I edit the route, telling it to avoid particular roads and towns?

        Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm getting (actually just bought, but am taking back) a portable GPS navigator for my car. just bought the Garmin Nuvi 205W after looking through several reviews. I don't need anything extremely fancy but now I'm realizing it doesn't have speaking directions, which I need. anyway, having MP3 playback capability isn't a necessity for me but now I'm re-thinking it again since I'm getting a different navigator. I'm headed in the direction of the TomTom GO 630 right now and apparently it has MP3 capability. I just wanted to know when dealing with the MP3 part of the navigation system, how does it sound when it goes through your car speaker? And is it hard to hook up? Will it sound exactly like your car's CD player?

1312390155 23 What's the difference between different Garmin map types?

I bought a Garmin nuvi 275t GPS which includes maps of USA and Europe. I'm looking at the Garmin site and wondering what the difference is between the Navigator maps (e.g. North America…) and the city maps (e.g. CityXplorer, Bay Area) and the water maps and the topo maps.

Does anyone know what the overlap, if any, is? or a web page / site that explains it?

It appears that I have the road maps for those two areas, the equivalent of the City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe. Would I then have to buy the CityXplorer London if I'm going to London and want additional POI, transit maps, etc. or am I covered with City Navigator Europe?

While I'm on a roll – do the topo and street maps interact nicely with each other? or do I have to switch between the street maps and the topo maps depending on what I'm doing?

              TIA.

I have a Garmin Nuvi and my maps are a year old and I live in Los Angeles. Do I need a map update?

I dig the Garmin, works well, but don't feel like a map update is really worth the $90 that Garmin charges for lifetime map updates. Does anyone disagree with that? Do you live in LA and have found that having the most update maps are an absolute necessity when driving? Is there something I'm not considering? thanks.

Nah! the present streets haven't changed much, and the recession puts a damper on construction which creates new streets. For the present send that $90 bucks on something else.

I find my old Thomas Guide map book from 1987 is still reasonably accurate. Very little has changed.

Streets in LA do not change much. never considered using a GPS here.

Is the map file available for free? Does it need to be unlocked somehow? my.garmin.com suggests I need to but it's an incomprehensible process. happy to pay but want it to be easy and want to avoid going to a store or sending the unit to garmin. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend for you to consider simply purchasing the Garmin EU mapping software on an SD card.
You will not be able to load the EU and NA in one unit if it did not originally come with both maps, so it maybe best for you to purchase the EU SD card. The map update use to cost $299 and is now down to $149 which is a great deal.
