Should i buy it refurbished? I can save about fifty bucks by getting it refurb'd.
I think i once heard that buying a refurbushed GPS is really bad because the maps are not updated, and its not worth it
What say you?
well, it's no different than the new ones.
I'm pretty sure it's got some kind of memory for the maps if it's not just all live feed, in which case it would be sent direct from their satellites and databases and what have you… if updated maps are a feature of the unit, then they'll still update
Refurbishment just means that they got it back, reinspected it, fixed anything that wasn't good enough quality for them (Most of the time probably just replacing the shell and/or screen and making sure all the components work right), then they sell it back more new than used.
Would you buy a refurbished GPS? I'm thinking of buying the garmin nuvi 255w but i dont know…?

I own a Forerunner 205 Garmin Forerunner that we used extensively for running. Lengthy ago i got the 405 while far have owned it for many short runs (3-5 miles) andf the other longer run (10 miles)
Note: since i have Garmin Forerunner got the Garmin 405 and wrote this review, I’ve done about 15 shorter runs (3-7 miles each) and 5 longer runs (10-13 miles each). My original review still stands.
The fit and comfort with the 405 will be much nicer in comparison to the 205. The band is robust and versatile,Garmin Forerunner plus the event conforms for a wrist as good as the boxy 205. The 405 can be smaller and appearance a lot more like a consistent watch; however, still includes a high profile and that i probably wouldn’t endeavor to wear it being normal watch Garmin Forerunner.
The GPS functionality is really a lot nicer, and this is definitely the biggest plus in my situation. when Garmin Forerunner I turned it on, it took about 2 minutes to lock on. However, any subsequent uses there after simply have taken around 5 seconds to aquire satellites you can also be ready for usage. The truth is mostly about roughly the same as the 205.
The 405 uses wireless technology (a bit like like bluetooth) to convey for a computer. Developing push the button, you just need to hold the watch within range but it will surely automatically connect and upload any new runs/workouts to their Garmin software and the Garmin connect website. Good feature, and much nicer versus old 205 USB cradle Garmin Forerunner.
Other stuff: the 405 just has 3 configurable data fields (you could have them show pace, pulse, distance, time, sunrise, sunset, etc) per screen versus four data fields per screen at the 205. However, with 3 available screens you still have 9 data fields your able to use, which happens to be adequate to do. not necessarily waterproof (it’s watertight), therefore you cant use it for swimming. The charger will be little funky clip with spring loaded contacts- Let me really need to report back about how long they last. The touch-sensitive bezel makes navigation simple it’s fairly intuitive make use of, yet it’s some flaky sometimes, which is why I gave it 4 stars in lieu of Garmin Forerunner 5.
Garmin connect is much nicer versus the old Motionbased website, considering that all things are Garmin Forerunner free.

The 405 model is newer by a couple years, and is more expensive.
The 305 has been around awhile and is very popular, and probably the best value.
The 405 is slightly smaller and probably "looks" better — it's more like a watch and not as "clunky." I believe it may acquire satellites a bit faster, too. On the downside, you can't display as many data screens at once as on the 305. Many people have also had repeated problems with its touch bezel that's used for controlling things. otherwise they didn't really add any features to the 405, and I think they've even pulled out a couple (like multi-sport ability) since the 305.
I'd personally either look at the latest 310XT or the 305. the 310XT is also pricey, but is fully waterproof (and not just water resistant) so that people like triathletes can truly use it, and it can also have their newer heart monitor which is supposed to be more comfortable. It's also of a smaller form than the 305.
If you're concerned about function over looks, stick with the 310XT or 305. the 310XT would normally be preferable, but it remains pretty pricey just to get a couple things like waterproofing and the smaller size. the 305 remains easily the best value out there, as it has been for at least a couple years now.
I would suggest to get Forerunner 305 – its the bestseller this holiday season. If you looking for value – check this deal on refurbished Garmin Forerunner: http://www.gps4us.com/gps.asp?id=713
For only $147.95 you'll get refurbished Garmin Forerunner 305 with free shipping in US.

I set it up and I guess I didn't have a good view of the sky when it did the initial acquiring satellite thing because it continually tells me I am in Toronto, Ontario when in fact I am in Vancouver, British Columbia. how can I reset it to do the acquiring satellites at start up thing?

The Garmin 255w GPS can be found online for under $200 and has text-to-speech (TTS) which is commonly found in more expensive kits. TTS allows the device to give directions with street names instead of the generic turn left/right at a certain distance. The Garmin 255W GPS comes loaded with Navteq data of North America + Hawaii + Puerto Rico and includes 6.5 million findable points of interest.
Other valued features include HotFix (Long Term Ephemeris Prediction) which helps locate satellites quicker, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Basemap shows 3D shaded terrain features, Photo Navigation allows uploading of geo-coded photos from a phone, geo-coding camera or photo site and navigate to them, and the ability to send addresses directly to your Garmin from Google Maps or Mapquest via PC. there are a few things that I discovered to be slow about the nuvi 255W package. The first is the lack of an included mini-USB cable. As someone who reviews tech gadgets I have many of these cables lying around but for the average user this type of cable may be difficult to have at home. Garmin should package a mini-USB cable with this package.
While charging the Garmin 255W GPS I discovered that there is no charge indicator of any sort. This is not a big issue since the unit can be charged in the car but it is often good to know if your device is running out of charge or not. Battery life according to Garmin is around four hours with the rechargeable Lithium battery. during use I found it to last anywhere from three hours and fifteen minutes to three and half hours. Ultimately the Garmin has a deep menu system which to some people may be a bit restraining. The less technology inclined may not use all the characteristics of the “entry” model GPS because of its expansive menu. Luckily they will still get plenty of functions from this GPS device.
The importance of a great GPS system is the interface and the Garmin 255W GPS is one of the best ones that I have dealt with in comparison to other GPS models. It is a very well designed unit from the outer casing to the software inside. Garmin has been considered as the number one in GPS technology and they continue to dominate. while it is sold as an entry level unit in terms of price, its features and function make it act like a more expensive GPS model. Routing works great and that is the most important feature in these devices. TTS and the widescreen helps the nuvi 255W standout over other similarly priced models. If you are searching for a deep starter GPS unit, then the Garmin 255W GPS is the ultimate choice.
